WWI Service Flag Newspaper Articles
The Selective Service Act was enacted May 18th, 1917. As men enlisted or were drafted into the military, many groups created service flags to honor the commitments made for the country. The flags typically had one star for each man who had gone into the service.
Newspaper articles often reported the organizations that created flags and the men so honored. For family history, these articles are useful in determining schools, churches, employers, and organizations that men were associated with. A few articles include various details, such as rank, military service, and unit, current posting, promotions, and other information.
