The papers collected by Shirley Bucknum span several decades of research. They include correspondence with family members, other researchers, and archives throughout the United States. There are research notes accompanied by copies or transcripts of birth, marriage, death, Bible, and land records. A few files contain family photos. Of special interest are copies of an autograph book and journal dating from the late 1800s. There are pedigree charts and family group sheets to aid researchers.

Much of the research focuses on the Lanphere (various spellings) and associated families. Shirley’s research led to the publication of a research guide for this surname.
