Abstract: The Crawford collection contains a wealth of correspondence and research notes pertaining to the Hammond, Crawford, and associated families who settled in Ohio. There is a focus on the migration routes that the families took. The bulk of the collection is correspondence dating to the 1960s. Mr. Crawford kept copies of the letters received as well as carbons of his responses. Many of the letters are quite long and give detailed information about the families. Of particular interest are the transcripts of letters describing the lives of settlers as they moved west in the late 1800s. There are also copies of wills, pension files, Bible records, cemetery listings, and other records, some of which may be unique to this collection.
In addition to his own family research, Mr. Crawford answered queries pertaining to the surnames Hammond, Crawford and allied families. The primary locations were Jefferson and Portage Counties, Ohio, Maryland, and South Carolina.
