The bulk of the papers accumulated by James D. Barnett is correspondence that took place in the 1940s and early 1950s. The correspondence is from family researchers, archives, records offices, and professional researchers.  The papers include biographical sketches, newspaper clippings, notes from a diary, copies of vital records, and some church records. The most prominent surnames are Barnett, Elder, McClure, Moorhead, and Stewart. The most common locations are Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

Boxes 1 and 5 are notes, family group sheets, and index cards prepared by volunteers at the GFO (see Provenance).

The genealogical research papers of James D. Barnett were donated to the Genealogical Forum of Oregon in 1962. These papers focus on his paternal ancestors. The papers related to his maternal ancestors were sent to a repository in Kentucky. A financial gift accompanied the collection on the condition that the work be compiled into a book and made available to researchers. A group of volunteers worked on this project, the result of which was published by the GFO in 1967 under the title Descendants of William Barnett, 1679-1762 (929.2 Barnett).
