Lewis Henry Austin and his wife Esther Margaret (Paine) Austin researched their ancestors through correspondence and research trips primarily in the 1970s. Austin family research includes the surnames Children, Smith, Rigby, and Kalb; Paine research includes the names Kent, Brown, and Templin. Lewis and Esther also researched the ancestors of their extended families, including the surnames Stevens and McAlpine; Kephart, Haseltine, Schell; Ayers and Oldenberg. The collection contains research of the Children family back to the 14th century. Other material traces the Paine family in America to before the Revolution.
