Holladay PTA Service Flag, WWI

The Oregonian, 6 Jan 1918, Section 3, Page 9

The last meeting of the Holladay Parent-Teacher Association marked a milestone of much constructive work, the members of this association having assisted the Red Cross by contributing funds and work. The sick and poor have not been overlooked and at Christmas time the officers and their friends trimmed the tree, contributing warm garments and toys to the babies of the Albertina Kerr Nursery. A service flag was presented to the school honoring the students of this school who have entered the Army or Navy. Ninety-four names are to be placed on the roll of honor. The assembly room was thronged with parents, teachers and pupils who had come to pay homage to the brave boys. A patriotic programme had been prepared.

M. G. Munly presented the flag to the school in behalf of the Parent-Teacher Association.

In part Judge Munly said:
"This idea of the Parent-Teacher Association of presenting this flag and this list of names to this school was an inspiration. Who can measure its full significance? It is, in the first place, a conception poetic in the highest sense to represent these young volunteers by a celestial symbol. Yet what symbol could more fittingly typify these chivalrous youth? Like the mailed knights of the Middle Ages, like the heroes of King Arthur’s Round Table, whose deeds have been made to live in imperishable song, these young Americans have enlisted in this war as in a holy cause, and have gone forth with a purpose, a resolution, nay, a passion, as consecrated as those who went forth to seek the Holy Grail, or rescue the venerated shrines of Palestine from the profane hands of the Mohammedan. This may seem like mere rhapsody, but it expresses my perception of the American spirit."
